May Director’s Meeting
Greetings Ranchers. Your POA board had a Directors’ Meeting recently and a couple of items are worth noting.
First, after a solid briefing put on by Ross Hallihan from the Huerfano County Department of Emergency Management, your board decided to move forward with Silver Spurs POA’s participation in the Firewise program and to take the steps needed to become a Firewise community. If you are not familiar with what it means to be in a Firewise Community, please review the information provided below. There are many potential positives for our community such as community-wide consultation by trained fire mitigation experts, free mulching (use of a chipper) and the possibility of preventing initial insurance coverage denials, non-renewals, cancellations and policy increases. Ross noted that insurers such as USAA Insurance even offer discounts to policyholders in Firewise communities. To move our community forward in the program, we will need to form a “Wildfire Committee” charged with coordinating our POA wildfire planning and execution. The Committee will act as a liaison between our POA and the Huerfano Department of Emergency Management. Fortunately, a few of us have already expressed interest in participating in this important effort. So, if you are keen on being a member of the Wildfire Committee, please let us know before the next director’s meeting.

Second, the Annual Meeting of the Members in September will be here before we know it. We’d like to take this opportunity to remind the membership that there will be one board member position up for election due to a term expiration. The elected POA member will be voted in at this September meeting and is not elected to a specific officer position (president, secretary, treasurer etc.), rather the sitting board members will reassign or “shuffle” such positions at the annual meeting and announce the results to the membership at the meeting’s end.
To continue the safety and convenience we currently enjoy in our community and to safeguard probably one of the most important financial interests you have (your property/home), we need a healthy and fully functioning Property Owner’s Association Board. Each member of the POA should “Step Up” toward that end. Taking one or more of these positions is not merely a service, it is an obligation. Any board member can answer questions you might have regarding running for POA board leadership.
As a reminder, POA Director’s Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every other month. The next meeting will be on 8 July 2026 and attendance is open to the POA membership. Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for your attention to these matters.
